Bridging Worlds: An International Black Theatre Initiative launches Hattiloo’s Pan-African collaborations, marking the start of its next twenty years of leadership in uniting Black theatre across the globe.

Alongside powerful performances, artists will lead immersive workshops, masterclasses, and public discussions to foster cultural exchange and dialogue. Bridging Worlds celebrates the shared Black experience across the diaspora, uniting Memphis with the global stage.

“Hattiloo Theatre’s International Theatre Festival will not move forward in the form we originally planned. While we are disappointed that several of our international theatre partners will be unable to join us in Memphis, an unexpected change in plans has also created an opportunity to go deeper.

Over the next three weeks, four artists from our Rwandan partner, Mashirika Arts Academy & Mashariki African Film Festival, will be in residence at Hattiloo, working alongside us to devise new work that explores Rwanda’s culture and history through theatre, music, storytelling, and art.

With more time together than we originally anticipated, we’re expanding that experience beyond the stage. We’re developing workshops, panel discussions, film screenings, artist conversations, and other opportunities that will allow Memphis audiences to engage more deeply with Rwandan artists and culture.

International exchange has always been at the heart of this festival. Although that exchange will look different than we first imagined, we now have an opportunity to make it more intimate, immersive, and meaningful for our community.

Sometimes a change in plans creates room for something new. We’re excited about what is taking shape and look forward to sharing it with Memphis.
